Tire Recycling for Residents
To avoid the hassle associated with waste tire recycling and disposal, it's best to leave your old tires with the tire shop when you purchase new tires.
If you do end up with junk tires, it is important to dispose of them properly so they are recycled and don't end up dumped.
Remember, as with all junk, if someone offers to haul stuff away for a price that won't cover the dump fee (for tires, $5.50/tire off the rim as of December 2003), chances are your tires will end up illegally dumped.
You will be held responsible for any of your tires found dumped, even if you didn't dump them yourself.
Please note: State law prohibits anyone but a State-registered waste tire hauler from transporting ten or more used or waste tires at a time.
Oakland residents have several options for proper tire disposal:
- residents in single family homes and 2-, 3-, and 4-unit residences can set out tires on their annual bulky pick up day (subject to Bulky Pick Up and Recycling Program guidelines); call Waste Management of Alameda County at (510) 613-8710 for more information or to schedule an appointment
- call a local tire shop and see if they will accept your tires (typically about $2/tire)
- haul up to nine tires to the dump yourself ($5.50/tire off the rim as of December 2003)
- hire a registered waste tire hauler
